Berkeley Castle
Historic fortress and family home
Berkeley Castle is a historic medieval fortress and stately home that has been the seat of the Berkeley family for over 850 years.
This remarkably well-preserved castle is famous as the site of the imprisonment and murder of King Edward II in 1327, and visitors can still see the dungeon and the cell where he was held. Beyond its dark history, the castle features grand state rooms filled with fine tapestries, silver, and furniture, as well as beautiful terraced gardens and a tropical butterfly house.
It is a place where history feels alive, with its thick stone walls and ornate interiors telling the story of one of England’s most powerful dynasties.
With regular battle re-enactments and seasonal events, it offers a dramatic and educational day out for history lovers.
