Clifton Observatory & Cave

Clifton Observatory is a historic landmark situated on the edge of the Avon Gorge, offering some of the most spectacular views of the Clifton Suspension Bridge and the city beyond.

Originally built as a windmill in 1766, the tower now houses a rare, working Camera Obscura that projects a 360-degree panoramic view of the surrounding area onto a white disc.

For the more adventurous, a 190-foot tunnel leads deep into the cliffside to Giant’s Cave (Ghyston’s Cave), where a viewing platform opens out directly onto the limestone face of the gorge.

The site also features a stylish cafe with a large outdoor terrace, providing a perfect spot to relax and soak in the dramatic landscape.

It is a unique combination of 18th-century science, local folklore, and stunning natural beauty.
