The Red Lodge Museum
The 'hidden' Elizabethan house
Often described as Bristol’s "hidden" treasure, The Red Lodge is an Elizabethan gem that conceals 400 years of history behind a modest exterior.
The highlight is the spectacular Great Room, featuring some of the finest carved oak panelling and intricate plasterwork in the country, dating back to 1580.
As you move through the house, you transition from the Tudor era into rooms reflecting later 18th-century modifications and eventually the Victorian period, when it became the first reform school for girls in England.
Outside, a meticulously recreated knot garden provides a peaceful sanctuary and showcases the horticultural styles of the 16th century.
It is a fascinating site that feels as though the previous residents have only just stepped out.
Entry is free but donations are always very welcome.
