Underfall Yard
Historic working boatyard
A vital piece of Bristol’s industrial heritage, Underfall Yard is a historic working boatyard that has played a crucial role in the operation of the city’s Floating Harbour since the early 19th century.
Visitors can explore the site’s original Victorian machine shop, which still houses belt-driven machinery, and learn about the ingenious engineering required to maintain the harbour's water levels.
The modern Visitor Centre, located in the old power house, features interactive displays and hands-on exhibits that explain the history of the docks and the lives of the shipwrights who worked there.
It remains a thriving centre for traditional maritime skills, with active workshops building and restoring classic vessels. Its position at the western end of the harbour also offers some of the best sunset views across the water.
